Birchbox December Box #1

Alright, it’s time, I can’t believe I am doing this, yayyyy! My first ever review, well, three reviews. I am going to start with the first of my three December Birchboxes. Back in November I had enough Birchbox points (more on that later) to gift myself a year-long subscription. So until next October I am set on my monthly box. However BB usually has a $5 promo going on so I grabbed two other boxes for $10 total.

In case you aren’t familiar with Birchbox, it is a monthly subscription service that sends you 5-7 deluxe sized samples for $10 (and occasionally a full sized item too). You earn points for reviewing your samples, 10 points for each sample, and an additional 10 points for sharing your box on Facebook. That means you earn at least 60 points each month and points can then be used like cash in the online BB shop. 100 points = $10, and points must be used in $10 increments. Combine that with promo codes and sales to reduce the price of items or even get them for free (what I call my Birchbox haul, but that will have to wait for another day).

My December Birchbox

This is from what I will now refer to as my main account, the free subscription I ordered with my points. Birchbox gives you the option of choosing a sample for your box out of a few different choices, or even choosing a themed “curated” box, which means you will know exactly what you will be getting that month. The choices for December were one of 3 different Coastal Scents eyeshadow duos, or a volumizing spray. I chose the spray since I am on the search for the Holy Grail of volumizers for my flat, thin, stick-straight hair. It is from Serge Normant and is called Dream Big. I say they need to dare to dream a little bigger darlin as all this did was make me look like I walked through a wind storm. My search for The Grail continues…

I also received Beauty Protector Protect & Oil. This is one of those things that make me say hmmm. I chose a volumizer so they sent me a hair oil to try along with it. My hair does not need an oil. I have written to BB to beg them not to send me oil, but oh well, I just pass things like this along to my daughters. It does smell amazing though, like all of the Beauty Protector line. I ordered the shower gel and body butter and they are divine.

Next is The Beauty Crop Lighting Crew highlighter. This tiny bottle is actually full size and retails for $18 on the BB website. A little goes a long way and can be mixed into moisturizer to put on your face or body so you won’t end up looking shiny.

Everyone received a Coastal Scents eyeshadow duo in one of 3 different color combos. By lucky chance I received all three (one in each box). This is an ok sample, I always freak out when I receive cool colors because in the past I tended to have an allergic reaction to pinks, purples, greens, and blues. The red-eyed lab rat look is really only attractive to other red-eyed lab rats so I always approach those colors with a bit of caution (and a bottle of Visine).

Finally, I received the Soap & Paper Factory Shea Butter Hand Cream in the Green Tea scent. This was probably my favorite item of the bunch, it went straight into my purse for use this winter. It smells nice too, like mandarin orange green tea.

All in all, I really did like this box. The products all smelled wonderful and the hair oil will last forever since two drops was all I needed to get the tangles out. Plus between the highlighter and the hair volumizer the value was at least $28. Not too shabby!

Coming Soon, my adventures with subscription boxes

Hi, my name is Debbie and as you can probably guess, I live in Texas; Pflugerville to be exact, between a rock and a weird place. One year ago I decided to try something that I had heard about but had previously been out of my reach until I started working full-time (and had a little disposable income), and that is a Birchbox. I had read reviews on various boxes, liked what I saw, and thought, “what the heck, it is only $5 for my first box, lets see what all the fuss is about!”.

               My perfume collection.

Fast forward to today, and in just one year I have tried Birchbox, Ipsy, Allure, Play! by Sephora, Target Beauty Box, and BeautyFix by Dermstore. I have discovered some great new (to me) products, some stinkers (literally), and some truly horrible lip colors, but for the most part, I loved the experience and am looking forward to trying even more. In addition to chronicling my adventures in beauty I plan to throw in whatever else seems appropriate such as cooking, gardening, my family life, or who knows what. I hope you enjoy a little glimpse in to my beauty reviews, share your own adventures and insight, and help spread the word. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
